Focus:

Many cities are adopting rules of thumb such as the 3-30-300 guideline (Konijnendijk, 2022) which increases the demand for robust monitoring of urban green: not only how much green, but also where, what type, for whom, and how it changes over time. This session focuses on applications of urban remote sensing for such multi-dimensional monitoring of urban greening.

We welcome contributions that use very high resolution imagery (e.g. aerial photos, VHR multispectral) and ancillary data (cadastral data, building footprints, height data, tree registers) to identify and classify green in fine detail. This includes garden and small-green typologies based on high-resolution data (Baker & Smith, 2019), spatio-temporal analyses of urban green under urbanisation and greening strategies (Zhou & Wang, 2011; Balikçi et al., 2022), and policy appraisal of local greening measures such as “depaving” and subsidies in private gardens (Bouwknegt et al., 2024; Zhou & Wang, 2011). A key interest is how such indicators and typologies are embedded in data-driven urban digital twins, conceived as policy support tools.
