Focus:

Urban areas concentrate people, infrastructure, and economic activity, making cities particularly exposed to natural hazards. Understanding what is at stake in urban disaster risk requires a systematic assessment of exposure and vulnerability. Earth Observation (EO) offers transformative potential for mapping and monitoring the complex socioeconomic and physical dimensions of (urban) risk, across multiple interacting hazards and throughout the full Disaster Risk Reduction cycle. At the same time, it can help to support the development of evidence-based urban climate adaptation strategies, which rely on detailed knowledge on exposure and vulnerability dynamics within cities.
This session focuses on the use of EO data to advance (urban) exposure and vulnerability assessment in multi-hazard risk contexts. We invite contributions
addressing:

  • Mapping of critical urban infrastructure exposure to natural hazards; 
  • Socioeconomic vulnerability assessment in urban settings using satellite-derived data; 
  • Post-disaster urban recovery monitoring; and EO applications supporting humanitarian decision-making in urban crises.
  • Interdisciplinary approaches that connect remote sensing advances with applied risk science
  • Contributions from diverse geographic contexts including cities in low- and middle-income countries.
